Woman robbed, man shot near police district in Mayfair

POSTED: Friday, October 19, 2012, 2:15 AM

A man was with his girlfriend and their 2-year-old child less than a block from a police district in Mayfair early Friday morning when police say two men brazenly robbed the woman and shot the man when he struggled with them.

The couple and the baby were in a rear alley on Mershon Street near Levick -- not far from 2nd/15th Police District headquarters at Harbison Avenue and Levick Street -- around 12:30 a.m. when they were approached by two men who grabbed the woman's purse, Chief Inspector Scott Small said. Her boyfriend fought with the men and was shot in the leg during the struggle.

He was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital and listed in stable condition.

Not long after the robbery and shooting, Small said, police spotted one of the suspects on Mershon Street near Robbins, about a block away. They stopped the man, discovered that he had the woman's purse and arrested him. Small said cops did not find a gun on the suspect.

The second suspect remained at large early Friday morning. The woman and child were not injured in the incident.

PPD did a good job on a few crimes last night and we need more quick arrest like that on the spot to catch two shooters that sending a message now keep it up People have to do there job and make the call fast when things happen.

Forget about the guns, what if all these people stop walking around these neighborhoods after dark, then the creeps would have no one to shoot but themselves !! HOLLA !!!!

We see a deadly sin on every street corner, in every home, and we tolerate it. We tolerate it because it's common, it's trivial. We tolerate it morning, noon, and night.

First off, if the news is going to report something... they need to get their story RIGHT. THIS IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED. This is my little nephew that was there. My brother in law, his girlfriend and my nephew were IN A CAR and were stopped to these two guys who were asking for help. Out of no where they pulled a gun on them. When my brother in law was shot he jumped and was hoping around to get to the police station trying to get help. They were found outside of the car after the incident. They were on their way home from a friends house.

According to these posts I'm reading am I correct in saying we should not be walking our streets, riding our cars, or being on after a "specified time". What about all the people who work night shifts (especially if they depend on SEPTA) and have children to get to and from daycare? What happened to "OUR RIGHTS" as citizens? We lose any rights we may have had because something might happen? How many of you walk away from your rights because of something that might happen? If you really want to do something convince someone that knows the person to turn their self in. It is bad enough a three year child was involved in such a horrible crime at gun point. I am only thankful no one was killed.

I will talk to my brother in law and find out. I should be speaking to him tomorrow. All I know is he looked young. Then again the other guy did as well. The one they caught that is, but turns out he was 27. All I know is the shooters name, but hes at least caught. Ill find out as much as I can.

hmmm.... The Father and girlfriend in a back alley at 12:30am on Friday morning with a 3 year old child. Must be drug related as always!. No reason for a 2 year old to be in an alley with 2 so called "adults". Make your priorities straight, stop doing drugs, get jobs, and take car of your kids.

Actually they were pulling out of a driveway. Like I said they were leaving a friends house... or dont you pay attention before commenting? SMH. People always gotta assume the worst, when its nothing like that this time around. God forbid someone parked in a driveway and goes to drive down the alley where they just pulled out of a parking spot! Grow up. Jesus. As I stated before... the story NBC, ABC and all them are reporting is NOT the truth. They were NOT out walking. There is a silver car right there. They were out of the car after me brother in law was shot, and the cops were processing the scene. God forbid people read and get the full facts before casting judgement.
