Ordinarily, Friday only seems like the longest day of the week. But today, it's for real. Welcome to the longest day of the year - and the official start of summer.
There's plenty of events popping to fill the long daylight hours this weekend, believe us. And there's even more happening after the sun sets.
Summer Soltice festivals are breaking out all over. At the Kimmel Center Saturday they've planned 15-hours of non-stop entertainment that'll go until dawn Sunday. In South Philadelphia, the Swedes will be dancing around a pole Saturday to celebrate Midsommerfest, and in South Jersey beer-lovers will toast summer's arrival on the Battleship New Jersey.
Weather-wise, it'll be a mixed bag. The National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 82 today with a "slight chance" of showers tonight throughout the region. Meteorologists are calling for a high of 87 Saturday with chance of showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon. Rain will continue to threaten on Sunday with thunderstorms "likely" through the afternoon.
In sports, the division-leading Phillies are in town for the weekend, squaring off against the ridiculously monickered Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Atlantic City's boys of summer, the Surf, are also at home for a three-day stand against the Worcester Tornados. There's also a Triathalon Sunday in Fairmount Park and a Roller Derby "Extravaganza" in Feasterville.
It's another fabulous weekend for music, both indoors and out. Giants of R&B will appear in the city and down the Shore. Frankie Beverly and Chaka Khan share a bill at the Mann Music Center tonight. The O'Jays, the Whispers, and Ashford & Simpson top the bill at the West Oak Lane Jazz Festival, and Stevie Wonder plays Saturday in Atlantic City.
The Popped! Music Festival will run three days centered at Drexel University Saturday with additional gigs at the Trocadero tonight and Sunday at the World Cafe Live.
But wait, wait! There's more!
The Southern Shore Music Festival in Cumberland County hosts Dr. John, David Bromberg and Robert Hazard. Additional fests down the Shore are thoughtfully provided for those us who like their music, food, and long days accompanied by a sea breeze.
And what would a summer weekend in Philadelphia be without ethnic festivals? Opposite ends of the Earth are being celebrated on Penn's Landing with a pan-Asian celebration on Saturday and a salute to the Irish on Sunday.
We've got the skinny from the city to the Shore, with details, below.
