VIDEO: Suspect sought in South Philadelphia murder

Philadelphia police released surveillance video of a suspect wanted in the murder of a fruit vendor in South Philadelphia last month.

Authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying the man suspected in the April 18 stabbing murder of Don Ly, a 68-year-old Vietnamese immigrant who operated a fruit cart in University City. Police were called to Vollmer Street near 4th for a report of a person with a weapon. When officers arrived, they found Ly lying in front of his home suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was later pronounced at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

During the investigation, police discovered the video, which shows the suspect on South Randolph Street near Oregon Avenue, blocks away from the murder scene. According to investigators, the suspect was first seen walking on Reese Street near Ritner, and possibly wandered the neighborhood for about an hour and a half before attacking Ly on Vollmer Street as he loaded his fruit cart just after 5 a.m. Police said the suspect may live in the neighborhood.

The suspect is described as a black or Hispanic male, 5 feet 8, facial hair or goatee, thin build, wearing dark-colored pants, dark-colored jacket, a black knit hat and black Chuck Taylor sneakers.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to contact homicide detectives at 215-686-3334 or 3335. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 215-686-TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP or 773847. As with all homicides in Philadelphia, a $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
