Upper Darby man shoots neighbor, barricades himself in home

One man allegedly shot his neighbor then barricaded himself in his home for several hours until a SWAT team was able to force its way in and arrest him, according to police.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said the incident began about 10 p.m. Sunday on Harwood Street in the Drexel Hill section.

That's when William Dean, whom Chitwood said may have been paranoid, allegedly shot at the neighbor five times with a .22-caliber handgun. One of the bullets struck the neighbor in the shoulder.  The neighbor was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia. He was treated and released for the non-life-threatening wound.

According to Chitwood, Dean believed the neighbor had broken into his home. However, that turned out to be unfounded.

Following the shooting, Dean locked himself in a second-floor bedroom, according to Chitwood.  Police attempted to extract him for about two hours then called in the SWAT unit.

Dean was removed without incident.

Chitwood said Dean would likely be charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and other charges.
