Union members to rally this weekend on Independence Mall
More than 1,000 members of local labor groups will gather Saturday morning on Independence Mall in opposition to this week's announcement by Mayor Michael Nutter that he made a "final offer" to the city's municipal employees' unions.
National labor leaders, including AFSCME President Lee Saunders and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten will join city union leaders to "will invoke the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of a just society that protected the rights of working families, which is now under attack in the City of Philadelphia as a result of the anti-union actions of Mayor Michael Nutter," according to a press release from the Philadelphia Council of the AFL-CIO.
The rally will begin at 10 a.m. and run until noon, the statement said. It will be held on the mall between Fifth and Sixth streets in Old City.
