Two shot in gunfight with bouncers outside Nicetown bar

Two people were injured early Saturday when a group of men began shooting outside a bar in Nicetown, prompting bouncers to exchange gunfire.

Officers responded shortly before 1 a.m. to the 1600 block of West Hunting Park Avenue, where they were met by two armed security guards from Triple Play Bar and Grille, police said.

The guards told investigators that a group of five men had exited the bar. Three of the men crossed the street toward a silver Nissan Maxima parked near the corner of Germantown Avenue and began shooting in the direction of the bar, the guards told police.

The bouncers returned fire and the gunmen scattered, with at least one of them fleeing in the Maxima, police said.

A 31-year-old man was shot in his left ankle and taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was placed in stable condition. A 30-year-old man was shot in his abdomen. He drove himself to Albert Einstein Medical Center and was listed in critical condition, police said.

Gunfire also struck multiple parked cars, including a silver 2012 Nissan Sentra that police found unoccupied with its engine running at the corner of Hunting Park and Germantown avenues.

Investigators later learned that vehicle was reported stolen in a carjacking that took place not long before the shooting, between 12:15 and 12:45 a.m. along the 4500 block of North Front Street, police said.

Police described the gunman who fled in the Maxima as a 6-foot-1 black male in his late 20s, about 215 pounds, with a full beard, last seen wearing a black baseball cap and flannel Burberry shirt over a muscle T-shirt. The Maxima likely has multiple bullet holes in the passenger side and rear, police said.

Investigators were looking for at least two other gunmen. Additional details about those suspects weren't available. No arrest was reported, as of Saturday afternoon.
