Three killed in overnight shootings

Gunfire claimed the lives of three people early Saturday as three separate shootings erupted across the city.

Police said the first incident happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. inside a bar called Mr. Chicken and Bernice’s Lounge on the 2000 block of Dennie Street in Nicetown.

A man was shot once in the back, near the left shoulder, and rushed to Temple University Hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

The bar, which used to operate under the moniker Buffy’s Lounge, has been the locus of several violent incidents, including at least two additional homicides, over the past two years, according to a Daily News article penned last August.

A second shooting was reported less than a half-hour later on the 600 block of Spring Garden Street. Police said a 21-year-old man was shot once in the chest and rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital.

Though the victim was initially taken into the operating room in extremely critical condition, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after 3 a.m., according to investigators.

Police said a third shooting victim was found shortly after 2:30 a.m., lying on the front steps of a home on the 5900 block of Addison Street in the Cobbs Creek section of West Philadelphia.

The 24-year-old man had been shot multiple times in the head and torso and was pronounced dead on the scene, investigators said.

No arrests had yet been made Saturday in connection with any of the crimes, and additional details surrounding the circumstances of the shootings were not immediately available. The identities of the three victims were not being released pending the notification of their families.
