Temple senior one of New Year’s shooting victims

A senior at Temple University’s Fox School of Business was one of three victims killed early New Year’s Day in a triple shooting.

Stephen Johnson, 23, was gunned down about 3:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day inside a house on the 1700 block of Venango Street in Philadelphia’s Tioga section. Two other men were shot in that incident and survived. A woman was also injured when she jumped from a second-floor window to avoid the gunfire.

Johnson was a senior at Temple's Fox School of Business, university spokesman Ray Betzner said.

Johnson’s was one of three fatal, separate shootings in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day. His killing was about two miles from the main campus on Broad Street, and a few blocks from Temple's medical school.

Lawrence Jeffries, 22, of Glenside, has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting that killed Johnson. Police said an argument sparked the incident. Jeffries is scheduled for a preliminary court hearing on Jan. 16.

The following night, Wednesday, a body was found in a burning minivan in Tioga, and a man was shot to death in Overbrook.
