TWU chief: I called for strike to start at bad time

In an era when unions don't strike much anymore, the Transport Workers Union is still willing to hit the bricks. And if you want to lead Local 234, you'd better be tough. Willie Brown is.

Brown, 46, grew up in West Philadelphia, dodging street gangs with Jeff Brooks, his predecessor as president of Local 234.

Brown is not tall, but solidly built. He's said to be intelligent, direct and plainspoken. He's calm and reasonable in conversation, friends say, but at times displays a volatile temper.

When he visited City Council members in City Hall yesterday, he told them his decision to take his members out on strike in the middle of the night had been made in anger, and not a smart thing to do.

"I regret calling [the strike] the time I did," Brown told reporters after the meeting. "But I don't regret the strike."

Councilman Frank Rizzo said he was impressed that Brown would admit a mistake and impressed with his demeanor.

"He was congenial, as calm, cool and professional as you'd want a union leader to be," Rizzo said.

Brown graduated from University City High School and became a trolley driver for SEPTA in 1987.

Brooks said last night that Brown was an effective labor leader because of his "humble beginnings."

"Just like myself," Brooks said. "That taught us that working-class people are entitled to more than just scraps off the table."

Brown and Brooks grew up in West Philadelphia around the Sherwood Recreation Center at 56th and Christian streets.

Brown told the Daily News in 2005 that they had run from or fought members of several gangs, and that a cardinal rule was that you never ran out on your partner.

"You'd get home, and everyone would say, 'He got a black eye. How come you didn't?'" Brown said.

Brown is married, has a daughter and granddaughter, and lives in Southwest Philadelphia, not far from the Elmwood trolley depot, at Island and Elmwood avenues.

He knows he's reviled by much of the city now, but Brooks said last night that people should know that "he's a compassionate person" who's spent a lot of time on union-sponsored charity work.

"They should understand that his purpose is not to strike," Brooks said. "His purpose is to get a contract." *

"Scraps off the Table" Ha!!! You're kidding me right??? These employees are lucky to have a job. Most of them are completely worthless with absolutely no work ethic or even a hint of proper customer service skills. They make Philadelphia look horrible to any outsider that uses Septa. Close the whole system down and hire an entirely new workforce. A workforce that wants a job and wants to do it well!

Compassionate. Not. He's a money grubber, an attention grubber and no better than a street thug. I question his intelligence at even calling for a strike. These guys ought to be glad they have jobs, a paycheck, health insurance and a pension to fall back on.

It would not ne so bad if they did not suck! They sit in the boof and tell you they do not sell tokens. That is all the union and thier work rules. You want ot get paid more - put some effort in!

It is nice to see a union leader with the guts to do what it takes to get a good contract. All they are doing is defending what they have. Their demands are to have a cost of living raise every year and not to have to pay more for health care and pensions. Totally reasonable. All of us deserve such things. It may be a pain to get to work but I, for one, support TWU!.

Considering Willie's "poorly timed" decisions affected tens of thousands of Philidelphians, I think we deserve MUCH more than just an apology.

his purpose is to keep poor people from getting to where they need to go. people who barely make ends meet barely have money for tokens, so they don't have money for cabs or regional trains. i guess he likes to keep the black man down

I will stand beside my labor Brother Brown. I don't see any of you people using your full name to spout your opinions.

Dah! One stupid rejoinder after another. When aked about how the public views him, he says he's hated. Now, when questioned about the timing of the strike, he "regrets" calling it when he did. But hey, he'd do it all over again.

if he had a gripe with nutter he couldve gone over his head to rendell. hes just tring to make a name for himself.fire them all, break the union and train the unemployed to run septa or let the government take it over since greedy corporate america seems determined to kill off capitaism and ring in socialism.

@Redjoe. "Their demands are for a cost of living raise every year" Well, we're in a period of DECREASING prices/deflation which is why there is no Social Security increase for 2011 (and it's why States like Colorado are LOWERING their minimum wage). Further, we would all like a raise in life---but let's face it, the economy is rough and most firms have pay freezes or pay CUTS. Your next comment: "not to have to pay more for health care". They are paying 1% of the premium today and are being asked to go up to 4%. I don't know about you, but most companies have employees pay 25-50%, and in some cases, 100% of the premium. I would be HAPPY to only pay 1% or 4% or even 10%...but going from 1% to 4% is the end of the world for the union.

God bless him for admitting his mistake. It takes a big man to do that. It gives me a brand new perspective on the strike. i hope they find a settlement that works for everyone soon.
