Suspicious West Philadelphia house fire under investigation

Authorities are investigating a suspicious fire at a West Philadelphia home on the same block where a 16-year-old was killed earlier this week.

The fire broke out shortly before 1:30 a.m. Thursday at a home on the 5600 block of Carpenter Street, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department. The blaze took about 20 minutes to get under control and one person was hospitalized, authorities said.

Philadelphia police said the cause of the fire is still being determined, but the blaze is considered suspicious.

Police said it's being investigated whether the fire is linked to the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Jaymire Rustin, who was killed on that block in the early-morning hours of New Year's Day.
