Students evacuated after fire at Ben Franklin High

Benjamin Franklin High School students were dismissed early Wednesday after a fire broke out in the building, forcing evacuations.

Firefighters first responded shortly after 12:30 p.m. for a report of a fire in the basement of the five-story school, located at 550 N. Broad St., near Spring Garden Street.

All students were evacuated, and the fire was brought under control shortly before 1 p.m.

Officials said there were no reports of injuries. The Fire Marshal was still on the scene around 2 p.m. Wednesday attempting to determine the cause of the blaze.

The School District of Philadelphia said through its official Twitter profile that students would be dismissed early Wednesday and the school was expected to reopen Thursday.

Special education students were taken to Franklin Learning Center and would be transported home from there, according to the district.
