Strong winds, flooding, power outages in wake of storm

Heavy rain that moved through the Philadelphia area late Wednesday and overnight had mostly cleared by this morning, but the storm left some remnants: Flooding, strong winds and lingering power outages.

A National Weather Service flood warning for small streams in much of the area is in effect until noon. At about 6 a.m., the weather service said water was "rising rapidly" along Crum Creek at Newtown Square and along Wissahickon Creek at Fort Washington.

"Creek flooding likely will occur," the weather service said.

Strong winds also swept through the region during the storm and it was still breezy this morning.

Gusts of 61 mph were reported in Gloucester City and West Chester saw 58 mph winds. Much of the rest of the area reported gusts above 40 mph, with 45 mph winds at Philadelphia International Airport.

Downed trees and poles left some area residents without power.

As of about 6:30 a.m., PSE&G was reporting 2,000 to 5,000 outages in Burlington County.

Atlantic City Electric reported 3,843 customers without power, with more than half of those in Atlantic County. About 1,100 people in Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties lacked power.

Peco reported only scattered outages.

The weather service says a cold front will move through the region today. The temperature is expected to fall to about 40 degrees by 5 p.m., and an overnight low of 29 degrees is predicted.
