Some Cape May-Lewes ferry trips canceled after fire

Some Cape May-Lewes ferry trips have been canceled for today after an overnight fire.

The small exhaust stack fire broke on the M.V. Delaware at about 2:20 a.m., according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority.

The ferry is one of the three vessels that shuttle passengers between Cape May, N.J., and Lewes, Del.

Preliminary information indicates the fire was started by an ember in a port engine exhaust stack, officials said.

No passengers were aboard at the time.

A night engineer discovered the blaze, which was quickly extinguished by local fire departments.

The vessel's trips for today have been canceled, but the two other ferries are running.

Officials said the 8:30 a.m. and noon ferry trips out of Cape May are canceled today, as are the 10:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. departures from Lewes.
