SEPTA: Burning golf cart prompts Suburban Station evacuation

SEPTA's Suburban Station was evacuated after a golf cart caught on fire on the concourse, causing the suspension of regional rail service to the Center City station.

A burning golf cart prompted the evacuation of SEPTA's Suburban Station Sunday morning, snarling regional rail service throughout the city.

A SEPTA transit police golf cart was found aflame on the Suburban Station concourse shortly before 10 a.m., a spokeswoman for the transit agency said.

The station at 16th Street and JFK Boulevard was evacuated due to smoke, the spokeswoman said.

The flames were extinguished, and no injuries were reported. Commuters were allowed back inside about a half-hour later.

Regional rail service was briefly suspended at Suburban Station, with all trains stopping at either 30th Street or Jefferson stations.

Service resumed around 10:30 a.m., but trains were only serving A section platforms, and some lines were experiencing delays of up to 60 minutes.

Service on the Market-Frankford el and Broad Street subway lines was still operating on or close to schedule.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
