Rape reported on Schuylkill River trail in Center City

Police are investigating after a woman reported this morning that she had been raped along the Schuylkill River trail in Center City.

The attack occurred near where the trail crosses under John F. Kennedy Boulevard shortly after 4:15 a.m., a police spokeswoman said.

Details of the incident weren't immediately available, but initial police reports described it as a rape.

The 33-year-old victim told investigators she didn't know the suspect. She was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in stable condition, police said.

The assailant was described on police radio reports as a black man in his 30s with a thin build. He was about 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 5 inches tall, had short wavy hair and was wearing a red shirt.

Police said information about the assault was preliminary and the Special Victims Unit was investigating.

The trail is popular route from Center City through Montgomery County for runners, walkers and bicyclists.

The path is closed to vehicles, but a car with what appeared to be a flat tire and other damage was seen stopped on the trail near the site of the assault, though its connection to the incident wasn't immediately clear.
