Delaware State Police are investigating a reported road-rage incident in New Castle during which a man allegedly fired gunshots at another driver's car.

Police said a 46-year-old New Castle man was driving west on Route 273 around 8 a.m. Thursday, when he slowed his car to 20 miles per hour as he entered a school zone.

The man noticed a woman driving a beige sedan behind him and following his car at an unsafe distance, police said.

As the man prepared to turn onto Route 141, the woman allegedly pulled alongside his car and gave him the middle finger before continuing west on Route 273.

Police said the victim then noticed a man driving erratically behind him in an older-model green SUV. The driver allegedly pulled up beside the victim and began yelling that the woman in the beige sedan was his wife.

The SUV driver took out a black handgun, causing the victim to speed up in an attempt to get away, police said.

As the victim turned east onto Washington Avenue, the suspect allegedly fired two rounds from the handgun, striking his car once.

Police said the victim, who was uninjured, fled to the Wilmington Manor Fire Company on U.S. Route 13, where he called 911.

The suspect was last seeing making a U-turn on Route 141, then fleeing south on Route 13, according to investigators.

He is described as a black male between 35 and 45 years of age with a large build and a full beard. His vehicle is described as an older-model hunter green Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon, possibly with Pennsylvania tags.
