Police: Mom left infant alone inside SUV in Northeast Philly

A 6-week-old boy was left unattended Monday night inside an SUV in the parking lot of a Northeast Philadelphia Walmart, police said.

A 6-week-old boy was left unattended Monday night inside an SUV in the parking lot of a Northeast Philadelphia Walmart, police said.

Police and emergency crews responded to the store on the unit block of Franklin Mills Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. after receiving calls from witnesses.

They found the child strapped to a car seat inside a 2005 Toyota Highlander, according to investigators.

Police said the baby's 35-year-old mother returned before rescuers were able to gain access to the vehicle. It was not immediately clear how long the child was left inside.

Paramedics evaluated the infant on the scene. He was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children before being released to his father, police said.

The mother, who has not been identified, was taken to the Philadelphia Police Department Special Victims Unit for questioning. No charges had yet been filed Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the investigation remained ongoing.
