Man surrenders in shooting ex-girlfriend’s 12-year-old son

The man who allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend's young son early Sunday during a domestic dispute in Port Richmond surrrendered to police Sunday night.

Jamille Carter, 23, turned himself into police "without incident," according to a news release.

Carter allegedly walked through the front door of his ex-girlfriend's home, on the 3500 block of Janney Street, around 2:10 a.m. His entrance woke his former lover, who was sleeping in a second-floor bedroom.

When the 33-year-old woman encountered Carter in her living room and told him to leave, he grabbed her by the shirt and smacked her in the face until she fell to the floor, police said.

As she was lying there, she heard a gunshot.

The woman's 12-year-old son, who was also asleep on the second floor, had heard the fighting and begun walking down the stairs.

He told police he "saw a flash and heard a pop," then felt pain in his upper left leg and realized he was bleeding.

Carter allegedly ran out of the house, and the woman gave chase, unaware her son had been injured.

She called 911 when she returned home and saw the child had been shot, police said.

He was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, where he was placed in stable condition.

Carter previously lived on the 1200 block of North 28^th Street in North Philadelphia but is also known to frequent West Philadelphia, police said.

Already a fugitive, Carter last June pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, along with various firearm offenses, in connection with an incident that occurred two years before, court records state.

He was initially sentenced to five to 10 years in prison, but he allegedly absconded from house arrest before his surrender date.

Carter was that July re-sentenced in absentia to 10 to 20 years in prison, according to court documents. A bench warrant for his arrest remained active last August.
