Police: Man shot by off-duty officer in Lawndale

A man was shot in Lawndale Saturday after an off-duty officer’s weapon discharged during a fight, according to police.

Investigators said the off-duty officer was involved in a fight with an unknown man shortly before noon on the 6400 block of Oakley Street.

During the altercation, the officer allegedly discharged his firearm, striking the man once in the leg. Police rushed the man to Albert Einstein Medical Center. His condition was not immediately available Saturday afternoon.

Police said the off-duty officer, who has not been identified, sustained minor head injuries and was receiving treatment from a medic unit on the scene.

The Philadelphia police Internal Affairs Unit will investigate the incident. Police said Saturday additional details would be released as they became available.
