A week after a black bear was spotted - and reportedly euthanized - in Bensalem, police in New Britain Township are saying another black bear may be roaming Bucks County.

According to a post on the department's Facebook page, there were several reported sightings of a black bear Tuesday morning. Police said the latest sighting was around 11 a.m. on Cedar Hill Road.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has been notified, and police are urging residents to steer clear of the bear and call 215-348-3524 if they see it.

Pennsylvania's black bear population has nearly quadrupled since the 1970s, and bears have reestablished themselves in upper Bucks County.

That is causing more bears to wander into suburban areas during their early-summer ritual of searching for a place to establish a den, according to Cheryl Trewella, information and education supervisor for the Game Commission's Southeast region.

"This is becoming more and more common," Trewella said. "This time of year, this is just kind of what they do, so we’re all prepared."

Trewella said the Game Commission is monitoring the bear spotted Wednesday, which had previously been spotted in Chalfont. She added that the bear was moving relatively quickly and may wander out of the area on its own.

If it slows down or stops, Trewella said, the agency will set a trap and attempt to safely transport the bear elsewhere.

In addition to this year's bear encounters in Bucks County, a young black bear was captured last July near the Valley Square Shopping Center in Warrington.
