Philly police officer suspended, charged with theft

A Philadelphia police officer was been suspended this morning with intent to dismiss after being charged with theft and criminal mischief.

Tayon Moore, a seven-year veteran, was off-duty and driving his mother's Chrysler 300 early on June 24 when he rear-ended a Drexel University student's car at 34th and Chestnut streets, according to the District Attorney's office. Moore continued to 30th and Chestnut Streets, where he eventually pulled over. When the student began to call 911, Moore became agitated.

According to the District Attorney's office, Moore "grabbed the other driver's cell phone and threw it over the bridge causing it to break. Officer Moore then left the scene of the accident without exchanging any information."

The student had recorded Moore's license plate number. Officers from the Accident Investigation Division tracked down the damaged car where it had been parked outside Moore's home, according to the District Attorney's office.

Moore surrendered himself to Internal Affairs this morning.
