Philly has more murders than days in 2014

Philadelphia has already marked 22 murders in just 20 days this year and six of them happened in a brutal three-day period this weekend.

Our grim tally of 22 is just one below New York City's 2014 tally of 23 - and they have 6.8 million more people.

The latest life claimed on Philadelphia's streets was that of Amber Long, a 26-year-old from Ritner Street near Bouvier. Long was walking with her mother last night on Front Street near Poplar in Northern Liberties when she was shot once in the chest by robbers, according to police. Robbers who thought her purse was worth more than her life, killers who didn't care that her mother had to watch her die. Long was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital at 11:15 p.m.

At 3:18 p.m. Sunday, cops discovered a mother and son had been shot to death on Stevens Street near Hasbrook Avenue in Crescentville. Donna Muller, 49, and her 22-year-old son, Richard, were both shot in the head in the home they shared. Police are still searching for a motive for their slayings.

Three men were shot to death in separate incidents Friday evening. At 5:55 p.m., Jahmeer Jett, 22, was shot multiple times on Grays Avenue near 62nd Street in Southwest Philly. Benjamin Collier, 29, was killed by gunfire around 6:10 p.m. just three blocks away on Buist Avenue near 61st Street. And at 10:40 p.m., 49-year-old Ernest Torrence died from gunshot wounds to his head and chest inside of his home on Parkside Avenue near 42nd Street in Parkside.

All six of these murders remain unsolved. Please, if you know anything call Philadelphia police at 215-686-8477. The city offers rewards of $20,000 for the arrest and conviction of any homicide suspect.
