Cops: Community College of Philadelphia student pulled gun in class

Police searched the Community College of Philadelphia this afternoon after a student reportedly brandished a handgun in class.

The 24-year-old suspect, whose name was not released, is expected to turn himself in, Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross said. The student wasn't located on the campus at 17th and Spring Garden streets during the search.

Authorities were called to the campus around noon after the student pulled out a handgun in a classroom, threatening another student. The student then left the room, prompting evacuations, an order to shelter in place and the police search.

Ross said it wasn't known exactly what prompted the altercation. No injuries or gunshots were reported, police said.

Police from the SWAT and Homeland units conducted a floor-by-floor search of classrooms at the college.

A message on the school's website instructed teachers, students and staff to shelter in place and await further instructions. Nearby Philadelphia School District schools were put on lockdown during the incident.

The suspect is expected to turn himself in within an hour, Ross said.
