Woman struck by light rail train in Burlco in apparent suicide attempt

A woman was struck by a light rail train in Burlington County this morning in what appeared to be a suicide attempt.

The incident involving a New Jersey Transit River Line train happened near West Broad Street and Commerce Square Boulevard, which is close to the Burlington South station, shortly after 9 a.m.

N.J. Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. said witnesses reported that the woman appeared to intentionally put herself in front of the oncoming northbound train.

She was alive when she was taken by helicopter to a hospital, Durso said.

There were 38 passengers on the train at the time of the incident, he said. No other injuries were reported.

The transit agency's River Line service was temporarily suspended between the Florence and Burlington South stations while authorities investigated. Shuttle bus service ran between those stations.

By 10:45 a.m., N.J. Transit said light rail service was resuming, and the service was operating close to schedule by shortly after 11 a.m.
