100 homes lose power overnight in W. Philly as temps plunge

About 100 homes in West Philadelphia were without power for six hours overnight amid bitter cold after a PECO transformer blew.

The outage came as temperatures plunged into the single digits.

Romona Benson, a PECO spokeswoman, said the outage occurred about midnight as a transformer blew near 50th St. and Cedar Ave.

"We have a transformer that went out and have had crews out there all night," Benson said early this morning, just before the transformer came back on line.

Crews began restoring power as of 6 a.m.
