A man wearing earphones was struck by a SEPTA train in Abington Tuesday as he crossed the tracks on his way to work, police said.

The northbound Train 424 on the Warminster Line hit the man shortly after noon near the intersection of Highland and Mount Carmel Avenues, said Deputy Chief John Livingood of the Abington police.

"When we got there the train was stopped 150 yards from the crossing," Livingood said. "The man was sitting up and complaining of pain."

The man, who was not identified by police, had been bound for work at the nearby SPS Technologies. He suffered several lacerations but was otherwise alert, Livingood said. He was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital to be treated.

"He had a pretty good whack to the back of the head," Livingood said. "I'd consider him pretty lucky, though. Not many people survive to talk about these things."

SEPTA canceled two of its scheduled trains on the Warminster Line and shuttled passengers on busses between Glenside and Warminster, a SEPTA spokesman said.
