Man shot while answering knock at front door of West Philly apartment

Three men shot a resident of North 50th Street near Arch after tricking him into opening the door of his West Philadelphia apartment.

Three men tricked a West Philadelphia resident into opening his front door, then greeted him with a barrage of bullets early Sunday.

The men approached a woman as she sat on the front porch of an apartment building on North 50th Street near Arch around 1 a.m., police said.

Brandishing handguns, they forced her to walk inside. One man knocked on the front door of a unit. When a resident asked who was there, the gunmen told the woman to reply.

The resident opened the door at the sound of the woman's voice. One of the gunmen then opened fire, striking the resident four times, including twice in his stomach.

The woman ran from the apartment and called 911, police said.

The victim, 55, was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. His identity was not released.

Police described the suspects only as three black men between the ages of 17 and 20. No arrests had yet been reported Sunday afternoon.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Philadelphia police.
