Man shoots self at Woodbury hospital

A man shot himself inside the emergency room at Inspira Medical Center Woodbury today.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office said authorities responded to reports of a man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the emergency room lobby at about 11:40 a.m.

The man was transferred to Cooper University Hospital's trauma unit.

Prosecutors said the gun was recovered and the hospital is secure.

There were no evacuations or lockdowns at the hospital, officials said. No one else was injured in the incident.

The man had gone to the emergency room for treatment, but had not been admitted as a patient, said Diana Gervasi, a spokeswoman for Inspira Health Network.

Officials have not released any other information about the man or his identity.

Gervasi said ambulances were diverted from Woodbury's emergency room for about two hours while authorities responded to the shooting, but the hospital continued operating.

Counseling is being made available for hospital employees, Gervasi said.
