Man found dead inside tent in Delaware motel room

Matthew Ornstein, 34, was found dead inside a tent in a motel room at the Churchmans Road Days Inn in Newark, Del., police said.

A man found dead inside a Newark, Del. motel room Saturday afternoon had erected a tent on top of his bed and was using propane canisters to light its interior, police said.

An employee of the Days Inn at 900 Churchmans Road called 911 after going to a room to check on a tenant's welfare around 2:30 p.m., according to state police.

Medics found the body of Matthew Ornstein, 34, inside the tent he'd built on top of his bed, police said. Ornstein, of Chevy Chase, Md., was pronounced dead on the scene.

The discovery of several small propane canisters inside the room prompted the Delaware State Police and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control to assume the investigation, police said.

Detectives removed Ornstein's body with assistance from the state Department of Safety and Homeland Security's Division of Forensic Science.

An ensuing investigation revealed Ornstein had been using the propane canisters as a source of lighting inside the makeshift tent, police said.

Though an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of his death, police said it does not appear to be suspicious, and that foul play is not suspected.
