Man charged in Center City road-rage shooting

A man has been arrested in connection with a Center City road-rage incident in which shots from a BB gun were fired at a car that had two women and a baby inside.

Philadelphia police said today that 31-year-old Ali Shaffiat is charged with aggravated assault and other offenses for the Saturday shooting.

A 28-year-old woman reported that a red Mitsubishi Eclipse began following her on the 500 block of Lombard Street at about 7:20 p.m. Saturday. The driver was blowing his horn and hanging out the window, and then he fired two shots at her car when she turned onto Broad Street, police said.

One bullet struck her rear window. Another woman, age 20, and a 4-month-old baby were in the car at the time, but no one was hurt.

The suspect fled west on Lombard Street after the incident.

Police said officers found the Eclipse on the 800 block of Fernon Street on Tuesday and subsequently located and apprehended Shaffiat.
