Deadly crash snarls traffic on I-76

A fatal car crash tied up traffic on the Schuylkill Expressway for several hours during the morning rush today.

The crash happened around 5:15 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 76 near Montgomery Drive.

Police said one person was killed in the two-vehicle crash. That person's name was not released because family members were still being notified.

One car overturned in the accident, and troopers were still investigating the circumstances of the crash. Further details weren't immediately available.

All eastbound lanes were shut down for about an hour while crews responded to the scene. Major traffic back-ups were reported in the area for several hours, though police said the accident scene had been cleared by late morning.

SEPTA said several bus routes -- the 9, 27, 124 and 125 -- were using local detours from the Wissahickon Transportation Center to Center City for about five hours due to the accident. The buses resumed their regular routes shortly after 11 a.m.
