Smith, 53, was a lifelong Harrisburg resident and served as chair of the council's public safety committee.

Police said Smith became ill at home and was rushed to Harrisburg Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No further details were immediately available.

Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse issued a statement calling the news of Smith's passing "deeply shocking."

"I share the pain and loss that people throughout our city assuredly feel as we try to absorb this sudden news," Papenfuse said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time."
