Gas main break forces evacuations in S. Philly

A suspected gas main break Saturday evening caused the evacuation of numerous homes in South Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Fire Department received a call around 5:15 p.m. reporting residents on the 2200 block of South Eighth Street, near Jackson Street, smelled a gas odor.

An official said around 6:15 p.m. that several homes had been evacuated and that Philadelphia Gas Works crews were still on the scene attempting to locate the odor's source. No injuries had been reported at that time.
