Ex-VA hospital aide sentenced for stealing crucifix from dying patient

A former nurse's aide at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center was sentenced to probation for stealing a golden crucifix from the neck of a critically ill patient.

A former nurse's aide was sentenced in federal court Wednesday to two years of probation for stealing a golden crucifix from the neck of a critically ill veterans' hospital patient.

Warren T. Wells, of Moscow, Pa., was also ordered to serve six months of home confinement and to perform 100 hours of community service.

Wells previously pleaded guilty to the theft, which occurred as he was working at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center on Dec. 13, 2013.

Prosecutors said the patient died several hours after Wells stole her necklace, which had been given to her by her son.

He was dismissed from his job as a result of the incident.

As a part of his sentence, Wells must pay $100 in restitution and participate in an inpatient or outpatient substance abuse treatment program.
