Delco M.E.: Villanova student died from alcohol poisoning

The death of a Villanova student in August was the result of acute alcohol poisoning, according to the Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office.

The office released the finding Sunday after reviewing an autopsy and toxicology test.

A friend found Kinara Patel, 18, unresponsive in a dorm room in Sullivan Hall the morning of August 28 and called 911. At the time, investigators said they had no immediate cause of death, but they did not suspect foul play.

An autopsy was conducted the following morning, but the medical examiner's office awaited toxicology results before issuing an official cause.

Patel was formerly a student at the prestigious Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, N.J. Those in her hometown of Bergenfield were devastated by the news of her death. She had just started her sophomore year at Villanova's School of Business.

Patel spent the night before her death hanging out with friends, police said. They said there were "indications" she had been drinking that night.
