Delaware Valley Intelligence Center to open in Philly today

A new intelligence center is opening in Philadelphia today.

The Delaware Valley Intelligence Center will officially begin operations this morning at 20th and Johnston streets in South Philadelphia.

The center aims to promote information-sharing in homeland security matters by bringing city, state and federal law enforcement agencies together under one roof. Those agencies will work on collecting and analyzing intelligence about terrorism, weather disasters and other emergencies.

The new building is slated to house the Philadelphia police's real time crime center and criminal intelligence and homeland security units, as well as units from Amtrak and SEPTA police, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI.

The $20 million facility has been planned since 2006, and has been criticized over the years for the slow construction pace.
