A Wilmington man was arrested Thursday after allegedly jumping on top of a woman’s SUV and stripping off his clothes at a busy intersection. He’s also accused of taunting and spitting on officers as they tried to subdue him.
A 45-year-old woman was stopped at a red light around 4:15 p.m. when a man climbed on top of the roof of her car, according to a report from Delaware Online. The woman reportedly had her 6-year-old daughter with her in the SUV.
Passerby shot cell phone video showing the man crouching on all fours and pounding the roof of the SUV with his hands. He can then be seen jumping up and down on the top of the vehicle, according to one video posted on NBC10.com.
When officers demanded the man get down, he reportedly cursed at and spit on them. He can be seen on camera stripping off his clothes as he argues with officers. The man was eventually taken into custody with his pants around his ankles.
Police reportedly identified the suspect as Darren Staats, 28, and said they’re investigating the possibility he was high on PCP at the time of his antics.
According to court records, Staats is charged with disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child. He remained jailed Saturday at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
