A crowd of passers-by chased down and beat a man who allegedly pointed a gun at a 6-year-old last night at Mifflin Square Park in South Philadelphia, police said.

The incident happened at 9:13 p.m. in the park at 6th and Wolf streets, said Officer Christine O'Brien, a police spokeswoman. The child ran to his mother and said a man yelled and pointed a gun at him, O'Brien said. Other people in the park tackled the man and beat him; when police arrived, the man was lying unresponsive on the ground, O'Brien said. He was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with serious injuries.

No one else was injured. Police did recover a gun. The alleged gunman had no identification on him and remains a "John Doe," police said. Detectives continue to investigate.
