A head-on collision on the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge overnight and involving a police officer left the span closed in both directions for about five hours.

The crash near mid-span, but closer to the New Jersey side, occurred about 12:30 a.m. when a driver steered his vehicle from the right-hand, Pa.-bound lane, into the NJ-bound lane, according to a Burlington County Bridge Commission statement.

The vehicle then crashed into a car being driven by a bridge commission police vehicle, said the statement.

The bridge remained closed until 5:30 a.m. when all lanes were re-opened.

Neither the identities nor conditions of the drivers and occupants have been released.

The officer was treated and released from Cooper Hospital.  There was no further information on the civilian driver, who was being evaluated.

The accident is being investigated by the bridge commission and Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.
