2 killed in nasty Blue Route crash

A man from Philadelphia and a man from Delaware were killed this morning in a crash when one of the drivers went the wrong way on the Blue Route,  triggering a chain reaction that involved a sedan, a minivan and two tractor trailers.

The 3:42 a.m. crash shut the northbound lanes through to 7 a.m., snarling commuter traffic. The heavily-traveled road was closed northbound from exit 5 through exit 9 in Marple Township, Delaware County.

The crash occurred when a gold, Oldsmobile Royale driven by the man from Philadelphia was traveling south in a northbound lane and struck a green, Chevrolet Venture minivan driven by a Delaware City, Del., man, according to a Pennsylvania State Police report.  Police did not release the ages or identities of either driver.

The drivers of the two tractor trailers - a Mack and a Volvo - attempted to avoid the crash but swerved into the vehicles. Neither truck driver was injured.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
