Snow moves through eastern Pennsylvania; crashes snarl highways

Philadelphia missed out on a white Christmas, but parts of the region saw some post-holiday snow.

A band of snow showers moved through much of eastern Pennsylvania this morning, bringing just flurries to Philadelphia, but causing a number of crashes west and north of the city.

The weather service had cautioned that the snow could lead to slippery roads, and multiple accidents were reported on highways throughout eastern Pennsylvania as snow moved through the region.

Several crashes were reported on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Morgantown in Berks County, according to PennDOT. Westbound traffic was being detoured off the highway between exit 298 in Caernarvon Township and the Reading interchange.

Another accident on the turnpike, in Uwchlan Township, Chester County, briefly blocked all westbound lanes there, PennDOT said.

And a multi-vehicle crash Interstate 78 shut down all westbound lanes in Greenwich Township between exits 40 and 45.

Other multi-car accidents were reported on U.S. Route 22 west in Bethlehem, U.S. Route 30 west in Cain Township and U.S. Route 202 north between East Whiteland and Tredyffrin townships, according to PennDOT.

The weather service said 2.3 inches of snow fell in Reading, while parts of Chester County saw nearly two inches, with 1.8 inches recorded in East Nantmeal and Elverson, and 1.6 inches in West Caln Township.

Most other parts of the area saw an inch or less of snow.

Snow was expected to stop by early afternoon, and travel conditions should be much better by mid-day, according to the weather service.

The temperature in Philadelphia is slated to be considerably warmer than Wednesday, with a forecasted high of 41 degrees.
