Census: Pa. population grows by 9k; N.J. by 31k

Pennsylvania and New Jersey saw small population increases last year, according to new Census Bureau data.

The figures released today estimated Pennsylvania's population at 12,773,801, as of July 1, 2013. That's an increase of just more than 9,300 residents from a year earlier.

The bureau put New Jersey's population at 8,899,339, about 31,600 residents more than the previous year.

The figures place Pennsylvania as the country's sixth most-populous state and New Jersey as the 11th largest.

Nationwide, the population grew from 313.9 million people in July 2012 to 316.1 million people in July 2013.

The estimated population counts aren't as exact as the decennial census surveys, last conducted in 2010.

That April 2010 count put Pennsylvania's population at 12,702,379 residents and New Jersey's at 8,791,894 people.
