Man dies as car plunges into water near Boathouse Row

A man died after a red sedan he was driving plunged into the Schuylkill River near Boathouse Row this afternoon.

Rescue crews pulled the man from the scene and performed CPR. However, police said he was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m., just north of Boathouse Row. The man's car was pulled from the water just before 2 p.m.

Kelly Drive was closed as a result between Brewery Hill Drive and Lemon Hill Drive as the Philadelphia police marine unit investigated.

Officer Christine O'Brien, a police spokeswoman, said she didn't know how the car ended up in the water.
