Boy, 14, charged in after-school murder of Atlantic City boy, 13
A 14-year-old boy was charged today with murder in the killing of an Atlantic City boy.
Angel Mercado-Santiago, 13, was gunned down Wednesday afternoon following an argument on a city street. A witness said that a boy on a bicycle rolled up to a group of teenagers on Route 30, steadied his bike with the kickstand, pulled out a gun and fired several shots into the group. Mercado Santiago was hit in the chest. Another boy was struck in the leg.
“Boom, boom, boom. It was something I tell you,” Thomas C. Green told the Press of Atlantic City. “In broad daylight, too.”
Police have not yet arrested the alleged gunman, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s office.
Both of the shot boys were taken to a local hospital where Mercado-Santiago was declared dead. The other boy, a 15-year-old, was treated and released.
The alleged killer, who was not named because of his age, will be lodged at a juvenile detention center following his arrest pending a waiver to adult court.
He also will be charged with aggravated assault and weapons offences.
