Atlantic City man charged with killing mother, two days after release from jail

An Atlantic City man released from prison on Friday after serving 30 years for murder is back behind bars on a charge he killed his mother, according to a news report.

An Atlantic City man released from prison on Friday after serving 30 years for murder is back behind bars on a charge he killed his mother, according to a news report.

Steve Pratt, 45, allegedly killed his mother two days after he was freed, according to The Press of Atlantic City website.

His family had thrown a welcome party Saturday, according to the report, which said police were called to a house on McKinley Street early Sunday morning.

A spokesman for the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office did not respond to requests for comment Monday, but the prosecutor's office told the newspaper in a statement that an initial autopsy found that Pratt's mother died of massive trauma to the head.

The Press identified her as Gwendolyn Pratt, 65. Her son is being held in county jail on $1 million bail.

Pratt was convicted in 1986, at the age of 15, for shooting an Atlantic City man in the head after an argument and scuffle in 1984, The Press reported.
