Abducted woman home in Philadelphia

The woman abducted in Germantown on Sunday and rescued in Maryland is back home with her family in Philadelphia.

Relatives of Carlesha Freeland-Gaither say she has returned to Philadelphia after leaving a hospital overnight.

"Everybody is relieved," a cousin, Cinquetta Barfield, told reporters. "We can finally get some sleep now."

She said Freeland-Gaither told her to "thank everyone that was out there."

The 22-year-old was violently abducted off a Germantown street Sunday evening, prompting a harrowing three-day search.

That search came to an end Wednesday, when investigators located Freeland-Gaither and her alleged abductor, 37-year-old Delvin Barnes, in a Jessup, Md., parking lot.

Barnes is in custody and will face federal charges related to the abduction, officials say.

On "Good Morning America" this morning, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey praised the investigators and Freeland-Gaither.

He said detectives used "very good judgment" in waiting until Barnes exited the sedan they were watching before approaching him.

"They didn't want to have a hostage situation," he said.

He also credited the widespread distribution of surveillance videos from the case through the media and social media with helping bring Freeland-Gaither home safely.

"We put stuff on YouTube as fast as we get it," he said. "It really helped us out in this case and probably saved this woman's life."

Another likely factor in the nursing assistant's survival: her fighting spirit, the commissioner said. Video of the abduction shows Freeland-Gaither struggling with her captor and breaking a window of the vehicle.

"My understanding is even after she was in the car and she was bound, she was continuing to fight and struggle with this guy," Ramsey said. "So, she's got a lot of fight in her that probably helped keep her alive."

Investigators believe Freeland-Gaither and Barnes didn't know each other, and were continuing to probe what motivated the abduction.
