A couple of food chains are offering freebies today in observance of National Talk Like a Pirate Day.
"Thursday, September 19, any buccaneer to enter a participating Krispy Kreme and talk like a pirate gets one FREE Original Glazed® doughnut," according to KrispyKreme.com. "To the landlubber who dares to wear full pirate attire goes a bounty of one FREE dozen Original Glazed doughnuts."
"Full pirate attire" should include at least three of the following (and zero weapons):
"eye patch, pirate hat, bandana, peg leg, parrot on shoulder, pirate shirt / loose white shirt, knickers, leather belt, silver and gold necklaces and earrings, pirate hook, pointy black boots, or ragged brown sandal."
The Philadelphia area has four locations: 7855 Oxford Ave. in the Northeast, 1729 Street Rd. in Bensalem, 1305 West Chester Pike in Havertown, and 1170 Haddon Ave. in Collingswood. A Philadelphia outlet near Liberty Place was closed.
The Long John Silver's fast-food chain is offering a free piece of "classic whitefish" to anyone who says, "Arrr," and asks for it.
There are three locations in the Philadelphia area: 1700 N. Broad St. in Lansdale, 235 Bridgeton Pike in Mantua, Gloucester County, and 198 N. Route 73 in West Berlin, Camden County. More locations in the wider region can be seen on this map.
Dunkin Donuts doesn't have any freebies, but it does have a contest with a small "treasure chest" of prizes, including a $50 gift card, a mug, a sipper, sunglasses, an eye patch and a pirate flag.
"Between 9am and 5pm, followers of @DunkinDonuts on Twitter are asked to tweet us a Dunkin’ Donuts menu item in pirate speak using the official hashtag, #PirateDDay," says the contest announcement.
