Woman fatally struck, child injured by hit-and-run driver in West Philly

A 48-year-old woman was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver Friday night in West Philadelphia, police said.

Shortly before 8 p.m. in the 600 block of North 57th Street, the woman was hit by a newer white minivan that fled south on 57th, police said.

Medics transported the woman to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m.

Police on Saturday said that a 3-year-old boy was also hit as he and the woman were crossing the intersection at 57th Street and Girard Avenue. The boy was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was in stable condition.

After being hit, the woman was dragged by the vehicle for a short distance.

TV news reports said the woman was a grandmother who had just gotten off a trolley on Girard Avenue with several children. She was holding her 3-year-old grandson, when she was struck, 6ABC reported.

Police say the minivan should have significant front-end damage.
