2 hurt, dozens displaced in West Philadelphia apartment fire

Two people, including a firefighter, were hospitalized and dozens of residents were displaced in an overnight blaze at a West Philadelphia apartment building.

The Philadelphia Fire Department said the fire at the complex at 62nd and Chestnut Streets was reported just before 11:45 p.m. Thursday.

Fire crews encountered heavy flames at the building and responders battled the blaze for nearly an hour and a half. It was declared under control at 1:08 a.m.

Two people, one civilian and one firefighter, were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the fire department said. Their conditions weren't immediately known.

The Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania said 69 people, including four children, were at an emergency shelter set up at Sayre High School.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
