Two people were killed and two others were wounded overnight in a possible botched robbery in Philadelphia’s Nicetown section.

Police said officers were called to the 1900 block of Brunner Street at about 2:20 a.m. Friday for a report of gunshots.

Two men were fatally shot in the incident, while two other people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Several of the victims were found on the 1800 block of Juniata Street, while one was located a couple blocks away, near Clarissa and Brunner streets.

Police were investigating the circumstances of the shooting as of Friday morning. Investigators believe it may have happened during a robbery attempt, with the would-be robber possibly among the dead.

Police said a 26-year-old man was shot several times in his torso and pronounced dead at the scene at 2:33 a.m.

The other man killed, a 21-year-old, was also shot in the torso and taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.

The two deceased men weren't identified because their families were still being notified.

An 18-year-old man was taken to Temple in critical condition for treatment of gunshot wounds to his buttocks, and a 24-year-old woman was shot in her left forearm and hospitalized in stable condition.

The incident spurred an exchange of gunfire. Shell casings were recovered from at least two different weapons, including a .45-caliber gun and an assault rifle, officials said.

Homicide detectives were continuing to look for suspects and sort out what happened.

Several streets around the area remained blocked off with crime scene tape until about 8 a.m. Friday as detectives continued to process the scene.

Police towed a bullet-riddled white sedan from the quiet block of two-story rowhomes Friday morning.

The car had several bullet holes in its front windshield. Another bullet was believed to have entered a nearby home, officials said, but no one in the house was injured.

Friday's events notched another in a series of mass shootings in the city in recent weeks.

In June, 10 people were shot in one incident in Mantua, while a separate barrage of gunfire in Kensington a few days later left seven wounded.
